The mini slot machine has a special set of reels that are independent of the main game and when you spin these it guarantees you a win. Roaring Forties Slot The Roaring Forties as an online slot game title made us think of the actual 1940s. So, we were expecting to see reels featuring Slinkys, war memorabilia or the 1942 Pontiac Streamliner. However, that’s not at all what this slot is about.
Roaring Forties will make some of you feel like you’ve travelled back to the forties with the simplicity of this slot machine from Novomatic, however the title actually refers to the fixed 40 paylines it offers. While we are on the subject of structure it is a slot with 5 reels rather than the 3 reels you may associate with classic slots and enjoyed in years gone by.
Like most classic slots, Roaring Forties will be like marmite for most of you – you’ll either live it or hate it. Many of the symbols are familiar from other fruit machines by Novomatic such as Sizzling 6 and Xtra Hot, however something which is blatantly obvious once you’ve played all three is how slow the reels fall on Roaring Forties.
On top of this there is only a gamble feature which enables you to double up wins - so no free spins mode or fancy bonus games to enjoy but some of you will love that and that will be the reason you wish to play Roaring Forties.
As already mentioned there are 40 fixed paylines which cannot be adjusted and with staking options from £0.01 to £0.50 per line, this means a minimum bet of £0.40 and maximum bet of £20.

Fruity Symbols and Funky Sounds
It’s time to get fruity and reel in the wins with symbols that are common place in classic 5 reel slots, and there are ten of them in total. Fortunately Roaring Forties isn’t too basic for a Wild or Scatter symbol, with the Wild being text in an explosion effect and substituting for all others except for the Scatter which is a bright shiny star.
Old classics accompanying these symbols are a 7, and bell, with the rest being fruit – watermelon, grapes, plum, orange, lemon and cherries. The highest paying of these is the Scatter with five on a payline seeing you rewarded with a 500x win.
The sounds are nothing new and the avid Novomatic players amongst you will know the tunes off the top of your head as they have been used in a significant number of their games, however they actually fit in with Roaring Forties very nicely. Winning combinations result in an upbeat tune playing along with the sound of empty bottles being struck getting gradually louder.
Fancy A Gamble?
I guess we should feel rather fortunate that Roaring Forties even includes a gamble feature with how basic it is. If you’ve played Novomatic slots before you should already be aware of several gamble variants they offer, with this one being the playing card face down flashing between red and black, and it is available after every winning combination in the base game.
There are is a button available on each side of the playing card – one for red and one for black. In order to double your winnings you need to select the colour of your choice and hope the card stops flashing on the colour you selected. Choose wrongly and those winnings flutter away so tread carefully!

Boring Not Roaring
Sorry but even by classic slot standards I find Roaring Forties to be boring rather than roaring. Personally I do prefer more advanced slots such as 3D slot machines which boast animated characters and several bonus features, however some of you will be the opposite of me and want more simplistic real money slots like this which enable you to play more spins in your session.
It all goes downhill as soon as you spin the reels as it seems to take an age for them to fall into place which will frustrate even the hardcore classic slot players amongst you, while another classic alternative from Novomatic is their Sizzling Hot Deluxe online slot which maintains fast gameplay and is significantly more enjoyable to play.

The Roaring Forties as an online slot game title made us think of the actual 1940s. So, we were expecting to see reels featuring Slinkys, war memorabilia or the 1942 Pontiac Streamliner. However, that’s not at all what this slot is about. Instead, it takes on the imagery of the classic fruit symbols. Bizarre, right? Well, perhaps not, as the title does come into gameplay, albeit in a slightly minor way. Graphically speaking, Roaring Forties is very 2-dimensional, so you can expect to see extremely basic icons on its reels. Not only that, but the traditional theme goes even further with the introduction of the Novomatic soundtrack. Arcade tones ring through your speakers whenever you spin the reels, which is quite an awful sound on the whole. However, let’s find out what this game can provide in terms of any special symbols and features.
The layout of this game is actually a bit larger than what the normal video slot stands at. You’ll see five reels with four rows in total, giving you a bigger section to form wins on. This is also true of the bet lines, which stand at 40 altogether. Ah ha! So, that’s where the idea of the forties comes into it! These pay lines are set in place as well, so they cannot go through any sort of customisation. However, you can change around the value of the wager that you place per spin. This is done with the plus and minus buttons underneath the ‘Bet/Lines’ section. There, you’re able to choose from values between $0.01 and $2 per line. This means that a maximum overall wager of $80 is possible for all players. And there’s the inclusion of an ‘Autoplay’ button as well for you to use at your leisure. The visual side of things is nothing ultimately special. As we said, everything shows up in a very flat way, with a simple, deep yellow background being present too. The symbols on the reels are all relative to traditional imagery, starting with the icons of the cherries, the lemon, the orange and the plum. Any of these are able to provide you with rewards of up to 200 coins. Then comes the watermelon and the bunch of grapes. These ones can provide pay outs of up to 400 coins. You’ll also find that there’s a golden bell symbol on the game’s reels. Finally, the very highest paying of all the standard icons is the orange-red number 7. If you spin five of these on to a winning bet line, you will receive a maximum pay out of 2,000 coins.
Most people wouldn’t think that a game like this is able to provide any special features. However, Roaring Forties does have a couple of additions to it in order to ensure that players have an entertaining time. First of all, there’s the wild icon, which is present in the form of the vibrantly coloured word, ‘WILD’. This one will work as a substitute for all other symbols on the reels in order to form a winning combination. The only exception to this particular rule is the game’s scatter offering. And if five of the wilds are in view on a winning pay line, you’ll receive huge boosts to your balance. As we said, there is also a scatter icon in the game. This comes in the form of the gold star against a red background. Scatter icons provide you with pay outs wherever they show up on the reels. Therefore, if five of them come into view in any location, you can win a maximum pay out of 40,000 coins! Even four of them showing up offer up a maximum of 1,600 coins. However, unlike in most online slots, they will not trigger any kind of freespins or bonus round.
There is also a gamble round present in this game as well, which becomes active after every winning spin. If you take the decision to play this round, you will see a new screen come into view. This screen provides you with a face down playing card and two colour options – red and black. You need to make a guess between these two colours as to what you believe the playing card will be when you turn it over. A correct guess will then add a double multiplier to your winnings. An incorrect guess will see your winnings lost.
